America's Best Deal Discover why so many Cable & Direct TV customers are switching to DlSH !!! IS DISH NETW0RK better than DIRECT TV? What's offered by what programming packages? For years, Direct TV had the clear lead in the number of channels and number of specific types of programming specialties. That has changed recently. DISH NET today offers more channels overall, and just as many or even more specialty sports and movie offerings What are the pricing plans? Hardware discounts certainly favor DISH , however, DIRECT TV purchase packages are today quite competitive with DISH Net. Wise consumers need to ask, How Much, How (and When) Am I Paying for The Hardware, i.e., is it cash up-front, or is it Free. With Dish Netw0rk the whole set up is totally Free. What's your programming preference? Sports? The DISH NETWORK SATELLITE offers its highly popular College Game-Day Plan and has several season-long pro sports packages and if you have to have every NFL game the choice is superior to DIRECT TV. Again, consumers should focus on what they want to watch and what is typically offered by which packages, and for what prices. Movies? Both DISH-NETW0RK and DIRECT TV offer the same number of premium movie channels, such as Starz Encore, Showtime and HBO. Prices may differ slightly, depending upon the package in favor of DISH, currently they offer a promotion called DISH PAK, where 8 Starz/Encore channels are received at nearly half the regular price. The real difference here is in the number of Pay-Per-View (PPV) movie channels offered, where DishNet has a slight advantage for the time being, with up to 60 PPV choices/day versus DIRECT TV's 55 channels.) Adult? DISHNETWQRK, with 6 total "adult" channels, has the advantage here. Direct TV offers 5 "adult" channels. International? ***DISH*** definitely has cornered the market here, offering today approximately 30 foreign language/culture channels. DIRECT TV offers 10, most of which focus on the Spanish language audience. General Interest? DlSH Networks packages are amply described as offering favorable, "general interest" programming and continues to add more on a regular basis. Yet DIRECT TV.COM also provides just about every channel DlSHNETW0RK does, albeit sometimes in different packages and for different prices. Consumers need to decide what they can spend, what they want to watch, and which packages offer the best value based upon those criteria. What's your monthly budget? By our estimates, DlSHNETWQRK today is charging an average of $45 per subscriber per month for programming delivered to their consumers nationwide. However, their packages start at $29.95, While Direct tv customers are claiming roughly a $51 on average per subscriber rate per month. Digital Cable subscribers pay the most for the least in programming at an average of $55 per month. Direct TV's DVRs run into snags NEW YORK — Direct TV appears to have hit some speed bumps with the rollout of its new digital video recorder — one of the company's most important initiatives. Following at least dozens of consumer complaints to the company and on Internet sites about sluggish and occasionally idiosyncratic performance, Direct TV on Tuesday upgraded the software for the second time since the DVR was introduced last month. "Some things are not as intuitive as we thought, and we're polishing it," says Direct TV Chief Technology Officer Romulo Pontual. "It's the kind of thing we do for a living." It's important for Direct TV, which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., to get things right: The new DVR — with software from Murdoch's NDS Group — will enable the No. 1 satellite company to offer video on demand and other services that it considers crucial to help it compete with cable. But sales could stall if consumers still prefer the models it has marketed for years featuring TiVo. About 15% of Direct TV's nearly 15 million subscribers have TiVo-equipped receivers. Direct TV has stopped marketing those units — and is offering a full rebate on the $100 new receivers with the Direct TV Plus DVR. Sanford C. Bernstein's Craig Moffett says Direct TV should sell at least 500,000 receivers this quarter with either TiVo or its own DVR. Yet several people who have used both say that Direct TV still has to work out some kinks. The interface "is not intuitive, and it's not consistent in the way it performs," Gartner analyst Van Baker says. "There's a 'back' button on the remote, but it doesn't always go back. Sometimes, it takes you to a screen you haven't seen before." And Jim Jeffrey, an information technology manager in St. Paul, says he finds it hard to use the fast-forward feature. "I can't figure out how to skip through commercials," he says. "When I hit 'play,' I'm either too fast or not fast enough. So I go back and forth and waste a lot of time." Others say that the Direct TV units failed to record shows they had scheduled. Direct TV says it hasn't found that problem: "We do not have this bug in our system," Pontual says. He adds that the new software download should make it easier to control the fast-forwarding. But it won't mimic a TiVo feature which goes back as much as a second when users stop fast-forwarding. "Some people want it to stop where they press and not try to read their minds," Pontual says. "It's a choice." Despite some of the early problems, Pontual says, Direct TV's DVR launch is "an outstanding success" and should gain momentum in early 2006. That's when Direct TV will automatically place movies, sports clips and other forms of programming onto the DVR for viewers to watch when they want. "If you're new to DVRs, you'll love this product," he says. TiVo declined to comment. ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ and EL SEGUNDO, CA Nov 15, 2005 NBC Universal (NBCU) and DIRECT TV, Inc., today announced a first of its kind agreement that will give consumers access to the top programs of NBC and its cable entertainment networks, USA, SCI FI and Bravo, within hours after they air, commercial free, for just 99 cents. The programs will be available on demand through the new DIRECT TV Plus interactive DVR. This multi-year agreement will give the primetime on demand rights to NBC Universal TV programs, such as "Law & Order: SVU," "Law & Order: CI," "The Office," "Monk," "Surface" and "Battlestar Galactica." The programs will be available until the following week’s episode airs. NBC Universal's movies and TV events will also be available through DIRECT TV Plus, and on pay-per-view (PPV). "The way people are consuming content is changing," said David Zaslav, President, NBC Universal Cable. "Through this agreement with DIRECT TV, consumers will be able to watch top NBC content on demand for just $0.99 when they want, without commercials. It's a huge sea change. This deal is the first of its kind and we value DIRECT TV's partnership in rolling it out." "DIRECT TV and NBC are the first to offer viewers primetime programming on demand, and this agreement furthers DIRECT TV’s position as a technology and programming leader supporting our commitment to deliver the best television experience available anywhere," said Chase Carey, President and CEO, DIRECT TV, Inc. "DVRs have fundamentally changed the way people watch television, giving viewers greater choice, control and convenience. We will take the DVR experience to new levels by offering the widest array of network primetime programming available on demand." "We are thrilled to be able to make some of the best and most watched programs in all of television, both network and cable, even more readily available to viewers," said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Universal Television Group. "We are extremely aware that viewers can't always watch these programs when they're originally scheduled, and this will give them far more control over when they're able to see these shows." The DIRECT TV Plus DVR will be available at retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City this month. DIRECT TV Plus will be the most advanced DVR available with features such as 100 hours of recording capacity, interactive functionality, one-touch recording and Viewmarks, which enable viewers to mark favorite places in recorded programs and jump directly to them. The NBC TV programs that are available are some of the highest rated shows on television. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" opened its seventh season on NBC with its highest season-premiere numbers ever. This season, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is building on its "West Wing" lead-in by 52 percent in adults 18-49. "Surface" is averaging a 3.9 rating, 9 share in adults 18-49 and 8.0 million viewers this season to keep it a solid #2 in 18-49 in the competitive Monday 8-9 pm ET hour. "Battlestar Galactica" leads SCI FI Channel's high-powered Friday lineup, which consistently wins the night among all cable networks when the SCI FI schedule is in first-run. "Monk" was cable's #1 Friday series last summer and its July 8 season premiere was the #2 basic-cable original-series telecast of the entire third quarter. In its second season, "The Office" continues to deliver some of the most upscale audiences for any comedy on network television. Digital Cable subscribers pay the most for the least in programming at an average of $55 per month. ______________________________________________________________________________ Cable TV compared to DirecTV or DISH Satellite Cable TV and satellite from Directv or DlSHNetwork - which is the more superior system? There is a never ending battle between Cable TV and Satellite TV companies. Today, consumers have a choice between regular cable TV, digital cable TV, and all-digital satellite TV. Do you want to know which one is best for you? Lets compare cable and satellite from DirecTV or Dish . First, some general knowledge about Cable, Digital Cable and Satellite from DishNetvork or DirecTV It is obvious that the conventional cable TV are by far the least advanced. Compare to satellite, cable TV provides limited features to their customers. therefore most cable companies are pushing hard to get their customers on their digital systems in order to compete with satellite TV providers like DIRECTV or DishNet . Digital cable television has many advantages over regular cable. Through digital cable signals, consumers are able to get high-speed internet access and video on demand, as well as hundreds of cable channel choices. Satellite TV from DIRECTV or THE DISH Most of the features offered by digital cable TV are offered by both satellite TV providers. Example? Major networks offer their own version of high-speed internet through broadband. DirecTV has DirecWay , and DlSH has partnered with EarthLink to bring high-speed internet to their customers. Besides, satellite TV providers such as DIRECTV also provide electronic program guides, parental controls, and automated timers. Here are major comparisons of cable TV and satellite TV: Cable vs DIRECTV or DISH: Popularity Both Cable TV and Satellite TV are popular, although in recent years Satellite TV has made huge gains on cable TV. Cable TV systems require a cable to be installed from the network to your house. If your street has no cable you may need to wait a while before it is available in your area. Besides the cable you need a receiver. With digital services you need an additional box. Satellite TV from DishNetwork or DIRECTV requires a satellite dish, a receiver and a cable from the dish to your TV Cable vs Dish and DIRECTV: Reception Quality Cable TV and satellite TV used totally different systems for signal transfering. Cable has analog channels and even though you can upgrade to digital services, analog channels will still be analog, meaning an often unclear picture. Dish Network and DIRECTV is completely digital, which gives you all the advantages of digital systems. Very heavy rain or snow can obstruct reception briefly, but generally this is very rare. Reception quality is much better with Dish and DIRECTV. Cable vs DIRECTV or DishNetwork: Programming Cable TV, DIRECTV and DISH all serve high quality programming channels. Cable TV can handle up to 260 channels. DIRECTTV or Dish can handle more channels. Also, Satellite TV is more advanced in HDTV (High Definition Television) services. Cable TV vs DIRECTV and DISH: Pricing Pricing for cable TV and satellite TV have huge differences. DIRECTV or DishNetwork is less expensive than Cable TV due to many additional costs that are related to Cable TV: franchise fees, taxes, plus costs for any pay per view services, and equipment costs. Cable TV vs DIRECTV or DlSHNETW0RK: Interactive Services In general DIRECTV and DISH have more interactive services than Cable TV. Digital services like Dish Network's DVR (Digital Video Recorder) which gives the option to rewind while recording even in live broadcasts, EPG (Electronic Program Guide), Instant Weather, video on demand, etc. are all available on Satellite TV, but not all are available on Cable TV. Overall conclusion: Satellite TV is less expensive, has better picture quality (digital signal) and gives you more channels and programming options than cable TV. _____________________________________________________ DIRECTV News updated December 1, 2005 EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Nov 15, 2005 For the first time, the best of Venezuela's televised news and entertainment programming will be available to Venezuelans living in the United States via a new channel - TV Venezuela - exclusively for DIRECTV PARA TODOS® programming customers.
